The First Church of RPI Hockey traces its official roots to the 2007-2008 hockey season. During Hockey Line, two like-minded groups of friends obtained adjoining sets of seats in Section 16 of the Houston Field House. These two groups quickly merged, providing a loud and reliable voice at every home game. When feasible, this group followed the Engineers to away games, bringing a taste of the Houston Field House to cheer the team and dishearten the opponents.

The name "First Church of RPI Hockey" came about as a joke between the members of this group due to their intense devotion to the team. During this season, the name was frequently used in passing, but in no official capacity. Though the end of the 2007-2008 season marked the graduation of many of the founding members of the First Church, their fervor for RPI Hockey stayed with them. Each following season has seen the Church grow as new classes are filled with the RPI Hockey spirit.

The summer leading up to the 2009-2010 season brought with it the official unveiling of the First Church of RPI Hockey. At the annual Alumni & Friends Hockey Golf Outing, a foursome of First Church members was fielded. Their presence was met with extreme enthusiasm from the coaches and staff, who instantly fell in love with the name and appreciated the support.

Since then, the First Church of RPI Hockey has been a consistent, positive presence at every home men's hockey game, as well as several away games.
